For CHS 57 classmates and interested others
Alma
Brown Hall “Having a friend you've known
since the first grade is very special.” Suzie Trefny and I spent an afternoon
this past week, laughing and giggling like a couple of schoolgirls. I'm not sure that anything we said to each
other was funny; a stranger at the open door to her room might have had a
puzzled look. But she and I knew WHY
we were laughing! I recounted some of
our adventures as kids--selling Girl Scout cookies door to door, running up
(and right back down) the rickety front steps of the "haunted
house" on Prospect Parkway (just think, Cradock may not have been the
setting for To Kill a Mockingbird, but we sure had a Boo Radley house!), and
there was the Sunday evening she and I found all these old, old clothes, in a
chest in my parents' attic, proceeded to dress up in hats, gloves, canes,
umbrellas...And what do you do when you're all dressed up and no place to
go? You walk down _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Bill Nance “Perks of being over 68, 69, 70,
71” Kidnappers
are not very interested in you. In a
hostage situation, you are the first to be released. No one expects you to run...anywhere. People call at 9 PM and ask, 'Did I wake
you?' People no longer view you as a
hypochondriac. There is nothing left to learn the hard way. Things you buy now will not wear out. You can eat supper at 4 PM. You can live 'without sex' but remember how
good it was. However, you cannot live
without your glasses. You get into
intense arguments about pension plans.
You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge. You quit trying to hold your stomach in no
matter who walks into the room. You
sing along with elevator music. Your
eyes will not get much worse. Your
investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off. Your joints are more accurate meteorologists
than the national weather service.
Your secrets are safe with your friends because they cannot remember
them either. Your supply of brain
cells is finally down to a manageable size.

Knutson Livesay “Changing Diapers” Life is chaos - here we are, Stan and I, at advanced age and
have taken on a newborn (born Aug 4 and we received him August 14) and we
still have him with us. Never having babies, all of my 5 children were
7 and up when I inherited them via marriages, it is new experiences every
day. Some days are roses and some days are stone - but none
of them is boring. I Do not know how long we will have him live
with us - but just going to enjoy each day we have. Hard not to
spoil this handsome lad - Best part, he is a 7 pm to 7 am baby - I have to
get up and check to see he is OK - he is so quiet. Wish us luck -
and send a prayer for Isaac that all goes well in his life. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ John Bugg

I play golf 3 to 4 times a week any time the weather reaches 50 degrees. Retirement is hell but we must let the

wife, Ellen had a mild heart attack, whatever that is. Are any of them
mild? Gene being a trained paramedic
after a career in Firefighting recognized the symptoms immediately and they
were off to the hospital and at 4 am transferred to Sentara Norfolk General
for a heart catherization and late three stints installed in her coronary
artery. Ellen bounced back quickly and
went home after a short hospital stay.
She recovered rapidly and has no physical damage from the attack. She is busy with cardio-rehabilitation and
taking new drugs and in better shape than before the incident. Gene and Ellen are planning a trip this
spring to Pinehurst with friends. Gene
is waiting for the weather to break so he can get back to the golf course. 5325 Sports Club Run, _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Horace

I am so grateful and thank you all for helping me face up to 'what's next’? My family is the greatest, each and every one. They are scattered all over but in this age of technology keep up with me daily! I am so blessed. I flew to
Charleston, SC to spend Thanksgiving week with #3 son,’ Trooper', and my SC
grandchildren, their girlfriends/boyfriends, Beth (his new wife) and her
parents, her brother and his fiancée, their cousin AND my #2 son, Linwood,
and his son, Stephen (my Orlando grandson) were there also! It was
not as we gathered around the dining table on Thanksgiving that we all
were most thankful. . .it was as we gathered at the airport that
evening to welcome home from Italy grandson, Chris. He is now stationed
in Ft Walton Beach, FL with the US Army. Linwood came home during
Christmas holidays to visit with 'Granddad' (Gene's 98 year old Dad who lives
with me) and me. He, Rob (#1 son) and I drove to Now if I can get rid of this head cold and get past April 15th, I will be looking forward to springtime and attending the graduation of my granddaughter, Jennifer, from Charleston Southern University and to the summer visit of her sister, Liz, who will be interning at Outer Banks Physical Therapy and to attending an Army (9th Division) Reunion in Denver and to vacationing in Maine in the early autumn with Nancy and Charlie Burch and Patsy Marshall. In October, you will find a new brick
in the Memory Walk in Get me started and I don't know when to stop . . . I wrote this poem just before Valentine's Day in 1983 when #4 son, Jonathan, was half-past twelve! Some days he was a little too much - very spoiled - no, very loved. He was our Joy - arriving in our family almost ten years after our #3 son, Ken ('Trooper'). Now that is another story relative to this season of the year. I do not, nor do you, have time for that one now (I thought I had the Flu!). Jon entitled my poem when after a trying mother/son encounter I read it to him and asked him what he thought. "Just call it 'About Love'" I can still hear him reply without hesitation in such a matter-of-fact way. He thought I was wanting a title to what I had written. And since tomorrow is February - again - here is my poem . . . 'About Love' There's Young Love; there's Puppy Love, First Love and self-love, Mother's Love, Now tough love - There's Cupid's Love, too. But God's Love is the greatest Love: Unending, Eternal Love, Unconditional, Unchanging, Everlasting, Ever True. Love is Kind. Love Divides. Love Hurts. Love Provides. Love forgives and keeps on giving. Love grows and is ever-living. Be reminded now anew God Loves Me and God Loves You. 170 Baxter Cell: (252) 267-7013, hopeslaughter@embarqmail.com _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sonny Stout “Too tough to take down” Sonny Stout had open-heart surgery on

from six weeks in I had to come back
home for a couple of weeks to re-group, check on Melvin and catch up with
everything. I did spent a few days with grandson, Caleb (5), and his parents
in Speaking of
grandchildren, what fun to see them grow. Caleb received a scooter for
Christmas. I bought one so I could go out with him! Actually,
they are a lot of fun. I did leave it at his house though. Caleb
loves kindergarten, but he says that soccer is still his focus! We all
love soccer! My health is
ok, as far as I know. Melvin is
on a few meds --blood pressure and diabetes. He does a few car DXes,
when the are selling! Maybe, I will buy one so he can go somewhere and
pick it up. Ha. I had been taking
some courses through The LLL Institute of Manassas, but had to drop out
for this semester. The courses have been very interesting. Our oldest son, Eric
(41) is here in I am still a
huge soccer fan. Am waiting for the new women’ professional league
to start up again. I was volunteer for the old Washington Freedom and
loved it! Warmest regards to
my classmates and friends from Cradock.
