MOYOCK - Gary Lee Oakey, 59, of the 200 block of Beechwood Shores Drive, passed away May 11, 2009, in his residence surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Sept. 24, 1949, in Portsmouth, and was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Helen Oakey and a brother, Charles Ray Oakey. Gary was a graduate of Cradock High School in Portsmouth. He completed his apprenticeship as a pipefitter at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth where he worked for 40 years. Gary enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed family, friends, boating and cooking out. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 28 years, Jennifer Oakey; a daughter, Crystal Linn Oakey of Moyock; a son, Brandon Todd Oakey of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Bobby Oakey of Little Washington, N.C., and Ricky Oakey of Elizabeth City, N.C.; a grandson, Aeden Christian Thomas of Moyock; and many other extended family and friends. A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Entombment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
