PORTSMOUTH - Bernard Ray Grimes, 61, was reunited with his recently deceased wife, Emily Kristina, the morning of Aug. 5, 2008.
He battled numerous health problems with a smile on his face, never complaining. His sense of humor, ability to laugh in the face of defeat and compassion for others made him dear to everyone who was fortunate enough to know him; he will be missed immensely. A Vietnam Army veteran, he retired as an assistant fire chief for the U.S. government, working at NOB in Norfolk.
Survivors include two daughters, Shelley Klouzal of Portsmouth and Anna Katz of Norfolk; a son, Joel Klouzal of Portsmouth; a sister, Elizabeth J. Stubbs and husband J.D. of North Carolina; a brother, William D. "Sonny" Grimes and wife Joan of Portsmouth; two sisters-in-law, Judy Richard of Lucedale, Miss., and Ruth Lewis of Citronelle, Ala.; two brothers-in-law, Roy Silcox Jr. of Lucedale and Quinin Silcox of Citronelle; three grandchildren, Andrew Klouzal, Cassidy Klouzal and Alexandra Katz; and four close friends, Jan Washburn of Virginia Beach, Helga Bigelow of Chesapeake, Virginia Murden of Portsmouth and Wanda Brandon of Norfolk. His first wife, Diane M. Grimes, preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com.
