CHESAPEAKE - Samuel Willard Hedgepeth Jr., 57, loving husband, father, pop and brother, of the 1200 block of London Plane Crest, went to be with the Lord Oct. 3, 2001, after a six-month illness with complications caused by mesothelioma cancer via asbestos exposure.

A native of Conway, N.C., he was the son of the late Samuel W. Hedgepeth Sr. and the late Frances Jenkins Hedgepeth. He was a boilermaker of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and a member of Temple Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie S. Hedgepeth; two daughters, Nikki Lipscomb and husband Trey of Chesapeake and Tracy Overstreet and husband Brian of Portsmouth; three sons, Samuel Simmons and wife Kim of Chesapeake, Samuel Hedgepeth III and wife Terry of Lawrenceville, Ga., Michael Simmons and wife Michelle of Suffolk; a sister, Jane Drew of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Bobby Hedgepeth and Buster Hedgepeth, both of Portsmouth; 15 grandchildren, Lauren and Whitney Westerfield, Bailey Lipscomb, Ashley Dennis, Tiffany Foster, Krista Overstreet, Jacob and Phillip Simmons, Andrew Hedgepeth, Heather, Brittany and Madysen Simmons, Karrah St. Hilaire, and Chrissie and Cindy Evans; and ``other daughter'' Betty Gable and best friend, Leo Gibb.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at Temple Baptist Church by the Rev. Allen L. Dooley with burial in Olive Branch Cemetery. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is handling arrangements.
