Herbert Clifton "Herbie" Hale II, 59, died April 6, 2004, in Portsmouth. A native of Portsmouth, he was a son of the late Herbert Clifton Hale and Francis Zirkle Hale. Mr. Hale was a tennis pro at Cavalier Country Club in Virginia Beach and for Duck Woods Country Club in the Outer Banks. He served in the U.S. Marines and U.S. Coast Guard for 17 years.

Survivors include two sisters, Charlene Williams and husband Abner in Camden, N.C., and Mary Hughes and husband Sid of Portsmouth; a brother, John Joseph Hale and wife Emily of Virginia Beach; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Tom Holland. The family will be at his sisters home at 515 McLean St., Portsmouth. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is handling arrangements.
