Joseph Wayne Boggs, 47, of the 4500 block of Hunters Circle, a retired detective, died March 19, 1991, in a nursing home.

Mr. Boggs, a native of High Point, N.C., had retired from the Portsmouth Police Department after 18 years and had been first honor guard. He was a member of Portsmouth Midday Masonic Lodge 132, Fraternal Order of Police and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. He was a Baptist. Survivors include his parents, Margie O. and George R. Boggs of Portsmouth; two sisters, Pennie B. Cardon and Amy Boggs, both of Suffolk; and his maternal grandmother, Minnie P. Oldham of Richmond.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk, by the Rev. Earl W. Freeland. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Sturtevant Funeral Home.
