David Gerald Hall died September 8, 2010 in Charlottesville after a difficult four-month battle with brain cancer. Born November 20, 1942, and raised in Portsmouth, VA, David was the son of the late Jack Stansell Hall and Geraldine Bowman Hall. He was a 1962 graduate of Chuckatuck High School, but attended Cradock High School through the middle of his junior year. He loved his time at Chuckatuck, but his heart was always firmly placed in the Cradock community with lifelong friends and classmates.

David and his wife, the former Mary Matthews, made their home for 30 years in the Port Norfolk community of Portsmouth where he was active in the Port Norfolk Civic League. He was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church and served as Scoutmaster of the church's Boy Scout Troop 216. He maintained a life long interest in scouting, and was an avid and active patch collector. He was a member of the Driver Volunteer Fire Department where he served in many capacities including president of the corporation. He worked for 25 years at Virginia Chemicals, Inc. In 1999, he and his wife relocated to the Shenandoah Valley. He retired from Nielsen Builders, Inc. in 2009, where he worked as Safety Director for seven years.

David loved to be outdoors, and spent many happy hours contemplating his vegetable garden as well as hunting and hiking in the George Washington National Forest. He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Mary; his daughter, Whitney; his son, Kyle, daughter-in-law, Lara, and adored granddaughter, Rachel; his brother, John, sister-in-law Linda and nephews Joseph and Wesley; and a large and loving extended family. He was preceded in death by his younger brother Tommy. A memorial service will be held at Broad Street United Methodist Church, 300 Broad Street in Portsmouth at 2:00 pm on September 25, 2010. Friends are invited to come and share stories and memories; laughing is encouraged. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, 96 Laurel Hill Road, Verona, VA, 24482, Hunters for the Hungry, P.O. Box 304, Big Island, VA, or The Food Bank of Southeastern VA in Norfolk.
