Mary Lindsey Hoffler Hester, 54, died peacefully in her home July 23, 1998.
A native of Portsmouth, she was a graduate of Cradock High School, earned her bachelor of arts degree from Randolph-Macon Woman's College and masters in education from Old Dominion University, where she was elected to the honor society of Phi Delta Phi. Mrs. Hester was a teacher at The Saint Christopher School in Portsmouth for 10 years before returning to the Portsmouth Public School System at Lakeview Elementary School in 1988. She was a longtime member of the American Association of University Women and also was an active member in Phi Delta Kappa and Delta Kappa Gamma.Mrs. Hester was the daughter of the late Hinton Bennett Hoffler and Mary Davis Alston Hoffler of Halifax County, N.C. She is survived by her soul mate and spouse of 32 years, James Michael Hester; their three sons, David Michael and his fiancee, Mary Millar, of Laurel, Md., Benjamin Matthew and his wife, Mary Katherine, of Winchester, Va., and Joshua Robert of Blacksburg and Portsmouth. Mrs. Hester is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Hoffler Dodd, and her husband, Philip, and son, Geoffrey, of West Chester, Pa.; and her devoted in-laws, Carl and Frances Hester of Portsmouth.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, in Centenary United Methodist Church, Cedar Lane, Portsmouth, where she was a choir member and Sunday School teacher. The service will be conducted by the Revs. William Vann and Celeste Heath. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mary Lindsey Hoffler Hester Scholarship Fund, Randolph-Macon Woman's College, Lynchburg, Va. 24503. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is handling arrangements. |
