The Rev. Dr. Gordon Wayne Grimes, 60, died Nov. 24, 2003, at a local hospital. Born in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Robert E. and Frances Bowden Grimes. He was also predeceased by his brother, Stanley Grimes.
The Rev. Grimes was a 1961 graduate of Cradock High School and received his A.A. degree from Bluefield Jr. College in 1963. He received his B.A. in English from the University of Richmond in 1965, his Master's of Divinity in 1968 and his Doctorate of Theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1975.The Rev. Grimes was pastor of these churches from 1966 until 2003: Necessity Baptist, Necessity, Texas, First Baptist, Alba, Texas, Connelly Memorial Baptist, Roanoke, Va., West End Baptist, Petersburg, Va., Cave Spring Baptist, Roanoke, Va., Concord Baptist and Mountain Creek Baptist, Chattanooga, Tenn.
He is survived by his wife, Iva R. Grimes; a son and daughter-in-law, Gordon (Lora) Grimes of Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters, Gerlinda Grimes of Atlanta, Ga., and Gaynell Grimes of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Donald Grimes of Portsmouth; two sisters, Aileen (Milburn) Riggs of Chesapeake, Gloria (Jim) Carmichael of Roanoke, Va.; two grandchildren, Sarah and Will Grimes of Raleigh, N.C.; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Union Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Lynch Station, Va., with the Rev. Carlton W. Smith officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mountain Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 1001 Mountain Creek Road, Chattanooga, TN 37405. Condolences may be sent to www.heritagefh.com. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Huddelston. |
