Stephen Carl Root, 48, a native of Portsmouth, died July 21, 1990.

Mr. Root, a horologist, was a member of First United Methodist Church of Niles. He was an Air Force veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara B. Root; his parents, Virginia H. and Robert Root of Colonial Heights; two sisters, Barbara Sehon of Virginia and Shirley Root of Colonial Heights; and four brothers, Robert Root of Toms River, N.J., William Root of Texas, Gilbert Root of Portsmouth and Stanley Root of Petersburg.

Services were held July 24 in Niles. Joseph Rossi Funeral Home handled arrangements.
