CHESAPEAKE - Charles Shires, 72, of Quail Ridge Court, peacefully passed away Aug. 6, 2010.

He was a graduate of Cradock High School and was a longtime resident of the Portsmouth/Chesapeake area.

He was a retired owner of a well-known local body shop in Portsmouth, Johnson and Shires Inc.

Charles was a hardworking family man who made friends easily and liked nothing better than spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Ollie Shires, and his son, Randy Shires. Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Judy Shires; daughter, Linda Farlow and husband Jeff; two sons, Ralph Baker and wife Jan and Bobby Baker; seven grandchildren, Hunter, Fisher, Laake, Kelly, Justin, Nathan and Ralphie; two stepgrandchildren; two great-granddaughters; a host of nieces and nephews; sister- in-law, Frances Quick; two brothers-in-law, Harold and Joe Wilkins; special friends, A.J. Rudd and wife Cheryl, Paul, Beverly; and many other friends too numerous to mention who kept him going.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Michael Camp and Dr. Robert Bernstein. A celebration of life service will be held Monday, Aug. 9, at 1 p.m. in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Revs. George Presson and Tom Potter. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
