PORTSMOUTH - Jo Ann Black, 73, passed away on October 22, 2013 in her home. She was born in Bladenboro, NC to the late William and Daisy Hammond. Jo Ann was a member of Westhaven Baptist Church and was a graduate of Cradock High School as well as the University of Arizona.
 
Jo Ann is survived by her sons Jerry Black Jr. and James Black; her daughter-in-law James’ wife Kelley; three grandchildren Kayla, Shawn, and Connor; her brother John Hammond and his wife Lula; her sister Janice Wine and her husband Frank; her sister Gail Novack and her husband Dennis; and 18 nieces and nephews.

Her death was preceded by siblings Hazel Fowler, Sarah Straley, William Hammond Jr., Jack Hammond and Betty Tyler.

The family wishes to offer special gratitude to Paulette, Vicky, Wanda, Clarice and the Bon Secours Hospice.

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Friday, October 25, 2013 in Westhaven Baptist Church (WBC) by Dr. Bruce Powers and Rev. Traci Powers. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel is handling these arrangements.
