PORTSMOUTH - Walter Y. "Wally" Smith, a longterm resident of Richmond, died Feb. 23, 2006, at the Chippenham campus of CJW hospital following surgery for cancer.

He is survived by a sister, Sarah Senn of Portsmouth, where Walter grew up. His only brother, Carlton, resides in Fayetteville, N.C.

Walter retired from the Insurance Rating Bureau, but would rather be remembered by his friends for his many very active years as a coach, umpire, booster and organizer of girls softball in Chesterfield County.

A memorial and eulogy will be held at The Cremation Burial Society, 1927 Westmoreland St., Richmond, Va., Saturday, March 18, 2006, at 2 p.m.

Wally would prefer a gift be given to your charity of choice or girls softball of Chesterfield rather than flowers.
