Funeral services for Dr. Harold J. McGee Sr., 74, will be Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Jacksonville, Ala. with the Rev. Michael Rich officiating. The family will receive friends at St. Luke's Parrish Hall this evening, March 5, 2012, from 5 until 7 p.m. Graveside services will be held Friday, March 9, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Woodland Cemetery in Colleen, VA. There will be a visitation at Wells-Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston, Va. on Thursday, March 8, 2012, from 5-7 p.m. Dr. McGee died Saturday, March 3, 2012, at UAB Hospital in Birmingham. He is survived by his wife, Gayle S. McGee, of Jacksonville; two sons, Andrew M. McGee, of Jacksonville and Matthew H. McGee and his wife, Lisa, of Jackson, Wyo.; a daughter, Margaret M. Gobin and her husband, Kip, of Charlottesville, Va.; two grandchildren, Garth H. McGee and Dylan C. McGee; a sister, Kathryn M. Hudson. of Greenville, N.C., and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Harold V. McGee and Mae J. Weber and his son, Harold J. McGee Jr. Pallbearers will be William Hubbard, Franklin King, Donald Thacker, J. Michael Gamble, Matthew McGee and Garth McGee. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. William Meehan and Dr. Theron Montgomery. He was born April 13, 1937 in Portsmouth, Va. Dr. McGee received his B.S. degree from Old Dominion University and his M.Ed. and Ed.D degrees from the University of Virginia. He served as Provost at Tidewater Community College in Portsmouth, Va. from 1970-71. Dr. McGee was the Founding President of Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville, Va., where he served as President from 1971-75. He was Special Education Services Department Head and Psychology Department Head at James Madison University from 1975 to 1980, and Vice President of Student Affairs there from 1980 until 1982. He served as Vice President for Administrative Affairs and Professor of Psychology at James
Madison from 1982 until 1986. That year he was named the 10th President of Jacksonville State University and served as President until his retirement in 1999, at which time he was named President Emeritus. Among other honors, Dr. McGee was named the Distinguished Alumnus at Old Dominion University in 1994. He received an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from James Madison University in 1999. He received the Distinguished Leadership Award for Service to Higher Education in Alabama in 1993. He was awarded an Honorary Associate of Arts degree from Gadsden State Community College. Dr. McGee was a member of the National Collegiate Athletics Association Council from 1991-94. Memorials in his honor may be made to the Jacksonville State University Biology Department or to the Jacksonville Christian Outreach Center.
