Chesapeake - James R. "J.R." Keeney, 69, went to be with his heavenly Father April 21, 2006, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Marlowe, Tenn., Sept. 30, 1937. Jim moved to Portsmouth in 1941 and graduated from Cradock High School in 1955. After serving his country in the U.S. Army, he was honorably discharged and returned to Portsmouth to start his career and family. He was a longtime member of Cradock Baptist Church and spent most of his life coaching and mentoring youth as well as being very active in his community.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Carolyn S. Keeney; two children, Jeffrey D. Keeney and Jennifer K. Ellis; four grandchildren, Caleb and Logan Keeney and Tyler and Jordan Ellis; his mother, Delora Keeney; and sister, Delores Paine and her husband Jim.
The family would like to thank Heartland and Sentara Hospice for their loving care and support. We are also grateful for all the prayers and support from Western Branch Community Church, Believers Church and many friends in our time of need.
A memorial service will be held in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, Wednesday at 7 p.m. The family will receive friends in their home at 3517 Sugar Run in Chesapeake.
