William Clayton "W.C." Young
Class of 1952 |
William Clayton "W.C." Young, Jr., whose love for people touched countless lives, went home to be with the Lord on November 13, 2012. He was 78. Visitation will be Saturday morning from 8:30am until 9:30am at Colonial Heights Baptist Church in Ridgeland with a 9:30am memorial service.
W.C. (Clayton at the time) was born in Ashville, N.C., the middle child of five. Soon after W.C. married his beloved wife, Anne, he served in the Army and was stationed in Germany. When they returned, they lived in Virginia until 1998.
W.C. was a dedicated employee of Virginia Electric Power Company (now Dominion Resources) for 36 years. He was appreciated by many and greatly missed once he retired.
After retirement, W.C. and Anne moved to Madison, MS, to be near their daughter, Debbie Thigpen, and her family. Once in Mississippi, his love for people and cars was quickly noticed. He was asked to serve as president of the Macedonian Call Foundation of Mississippi, which provides cars for International Mission Board missionaries while they are home on furlough.
W.C. fulfilled a dream of learning to fly. He enjoyed flying for many years, logging thousands of hours and also teaching many students as an instructor. After Anne's passing in 2010, he began flying regularly again, with the Civil Air Patrol.
Always helping, always encouraging others, W.C. constantly considered others' needs before his own. Many days he was found delivering a car to a missionary and later taking a friend to a doctor's appointment. He loved learning people's stories about their lives.
W.C. loved his family and his church. He was active in Colonial Heights Baptist, where he served in many roles. A lifetime of church service included new church development, deacon body, pastor search committees, finance committees, and director of his Life Group department. Perhaps his favorite role was to greet people at the door of the church on Sunday mornings.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Anne Stublen Young, and by one brother and one sister. He is survived by a son, Greg Young, of Colorado Springs, CO, and his wife, Angela; a daughter, Debbie Thigpen of Madison, and her husband, Forest; twelve grandchildren: Gregory, Garrett, Timothy, Matthew, Sarah, Jacob, John, Julia, Joshua and Grace Young; and Jason and Clayton Thigpen; a great granddaughter, June; a brother, Carol Young of Virginia, and a sister, Betty Harper of Florida.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Macedonian Call Foundation of Mississippi, P.O. Box 156, Ridgeland, MS
39158.
