Col. William M. Boyd, 68, died April 11, 2003. Col. Boyd served 32 years in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the 82nd and 173rd Airborne divisions. His tours of duty included two years in Vietnam, three years in Okinawa and a year in Korea. Col. Boyd was a member of the Medical Services Corps. He earned two masters degrees, one at East Carolina University and the other at Baylor University. His contributions to the field of medicine included portable oxygen generation for the mobile field hospital.

Col. Boyd is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Payne of Engelhard, N.C.; three sons, Dr. John W. Boyd of Newport News, recently married to Dr.
Kian M. Kaz, William M. Boyd III and Kevin B. Boyd who reside at home; a daughter, Cathy Ann Jackson and a granddaughter, Mary Ann Jackson, both of Duck, N.C.; two brothers, Bruce and Richard Boyd; other relatives including Mr. and Mrs. Donald Wiseman; and many other nieces and nephews from Engelhard.Col. Boyd was proud of his service in the U.S. military.
He was a kind and caring father to his children and a loving husband. He and his wife, Mary Ann, enjoyed 46 years of marriage. He was a man of great integrity and solid values, which will be carried forward through his wife, his children and the people he touched during his life.
