WAXHAW -- Mr. Butler, 74, of Waxhaw, died September 24, 2004, at White Oak Manor in Charlotte after a courageous battle with cancer.

The celebration of Mr. Butler's life will be on Tuesday, September 28, 2004 at 11:00am at Calvary Church with Reverend N.C. Strickland officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service in Magnolia Garden, located beside the church. The family will be receiving friends on Monday, September 27, 2004 from 7-9pm, at Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington Chapel.

Mr. Butler, a native of Hinton, West Virginia, was born August 31, 1930. Mr. Butler was the son of the late Robert L. Butler and Evelyn Coleman Butler.

Mr. Butler is a retired Senior Architectural Job Captain from Belk Stores Services, where he completed thirty years of service. During his employment with Belk, he served three terms as President of The Construction Specifications Institute. During this period, Mr. Butler completed twenty one years of service with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Reserve. He retired as Lt. Colonel. He completed four years of service with the United States Air Force. During this time, he served in Korea and Japan. Mr. Butler was an active member for many years with the Gourmet Unit for the Oasis Temple. Mr. Butler was a member and head usher for many years at Calvary Church, located in Charlotte, NC. Mr. Butler is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Mary Floyd Butler. One daughter, Terry Butler Kelley and son-in-law Matthew Kelley of Indian Trail, NC, one son, Richard Charlton Butler, II of Midland, NC. One brother, Robert L. Butler of Hinton, WV and one grandson, Sean Kelley of Charlotte, NC.

Mr. Butler was very active in every aspect of his life. His greatest passion was for his family, and by his family and friends, he will be missed. Memorials may be made in memory of Mr. Butler to Hospice of Charlotte, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204 Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Funeral and Cremation Service, Weddington/ Matthews.
