Mable Clair Sumner

Virginia Beach - Mable Clair Young, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2016 at her residence of nine years at Westminster Canterbury in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Born on November 22, 1931 in Ahoskie, North Carolina, she was the daughter of Arthur Sumner and Raye Hughson Sumner. She is survived by her sisters: Jean Baufle, Elva Harvey, and Barbara Hudgins: and predeceased by her sister, Dana Russell, and her niece, Gloria Hutten. She is survived by 4 nieces and 6 nephews.

For 59 years, Mable was the beloved wife of R. B. Young. They raised their children, Jennifer, Suzanne, and Craig in a Richmond neighborhood by the James River. R.B. and Mable shared many common passions, including their enjoyment of playing tennis at the Southampton, and were also passionate advocates for the protection of the natural beauty of the James River. They frequently spoke of their shared vision to protect the James River for the enjoyment of generations to come, as they welcomed neighborhood discussions at their home, and initiated a letter writing campaign sharing their vision for the future of the river with garden club members and politicians.

With their three beloved grandsons, Bryan Lytle and Charlie & Joseph Jaeger, they were able to share their love of outdoors, including their enjoyment of the Outer Banks in North Carolina.

After moving to Southern Shores, NC after R.B.'s retirement, they enjoyed being a part of the Duck Methodist Church in Duck, NC.

A memorial service was held at 1 PM on Sunday, November 20th at Westminster Canterbury, 3100 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach. A reception is to follow in the Anderson Bayview Room.

A graveside memorial service in Richmond will be announced at a later date.
