Wharton ''Woody'' Frederick Simons, 72, of the 3000 block of Trappers Run, died Jan. 10, 2000, in a local hospital after a gallant battle with cancer.

Mr. Simons was a member of Jackson Memorial Baptist Church, Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge No. 178, AF&AM, and Victory Chapter No. 16, Order of the Eastern Star. For many years he was active in the Boy Scouts of America; he coached Little League, Pony League and Ladies Softball. His work included 20 years with Norfolk Iron & Wire in the steel construction business in and around the Norfolk area. After moving to Florida, he worked as a contract ramp consultant, responsible for the design, construction and installation of all passenger loading facilities for the cruise ships calling at Port Canaveral, Fla. His work was a source of great pride and personal satisfaction.

He is survived by his wife, Lilla Mae Simons; a son, Mark L. Simons; a grandson, Christopher L. Simons; mother, Cora F. Simons; a brother and his wife, Joseph C. and Nina Simons; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Loving Funeral Home Churchland by Dr. Albert A. Peveral Jr. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
