Portsmouth - Harry Rawls Shaw, age 92, passed away Saturday, September 29, 2012. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia to George R. Shaw and Hazel Holliday Shaw both deceased.

Harry grew up in Cradock, Virginia and attended Cradock Public schools. He joined the United Stated Coast Guard in 1939. During World War II he served on a LST 23 as a motor mechanic in the Pacific Arena and participated in five invasions. Honorably discharged in1948 he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He then attended the air craft machinist and flight engineering school where he earned his wings. He served the remainder of his military career as a Flight Engineer. He retired in 1959 as a Master Sergeant with 20 years of service. The next 24 years he worked in the General Services Administration, retiring November of 1984.

Harry was a member of Saint Andrews United Methodist Church, Portsmouth, Virginia. His happiest years were when he served as volunteer youth director at the church. He helped the young people develop a love for God, their church, each other, and their community.

Harry was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Jenkins Shaw in December 2010, his sisters Janie Snowden and Hazel Snyder and brother George Shaw. He is survived by his son, Roland R. Shaw, his wife Janet Spivey Shaw, grandson, Bryan R. Shaw all of Wilson, North Carolina, sister, Elva Reid of Suffolk, Va., and brother, Howard Shaw and his wife, Elaine of Washington, North Carolina.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Saint Andrews United Methodist Church, 5615 Portsmouth Blvd, Portsmouth by Dr. Dan Phillips Abbott. The family will receive friends in the church after the service. The interment with Full Military Honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk.
