Jayne C. Wilkinson died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, in Seaside Health Center, Virginia Beach, a victim of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), or better known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Ms. Wilkinson, 74, was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Joseph H. Cosby and mother, Helen G. Cosby. She is survived by several cousins and an aunt, Nancy Faulkner.Ms. Wilkinson was a graduate of Duke University and earned a master's degree from the University of Richmond. She spent many years as a teacher of government and history in the Virginia public school system. Among her many prize students was John Casteen, now president of the University of Virginia. Ms. Wilkinson was committed to the challenge of educating her students to become good citizens and good scholars. She is recognized as a member of the Half Century Club of the Duke University alumni and was one of Duke's most avid supporters, especially its basketball team. She was an active member of the Newport News Women's Club until her move to Atlantic Shores. Her love for music and her special voice were appreciated by all who had the opportunity to hear her sing. Jayne was a profoundly dedicated seeker of tru! th in all aspects of life, and a faithful member of the Church Universal and Triumphant. Ms. Wilkinson experienced the devastating impact of ALS and sought to educate the public of the horrors of this debilitating disease and to encourage efforts to find a cure in the hope that others may be spared this affliction.
