PORTSMOUTH - Joe G. Langston of the 1400 block of Carson Crescent West, departed this life July 17, 2007. He was born Nov. 3, 1941, in Mullins, S.C., and in his early years attended school there. At the age of 8, he relocated to Virginia and completed his education in Portsmouth public schools. He graduated from Norfolk State College. 

He retired from the Portsmouth Public School System after 34 years of devoted service as an athletic coach and teacher. 

He was predeceased by his parents, George and Eva Langston. Survivors include his wife Barbara; son, Dominique (Dawn) Langston; a sister, Yvonne "Connie" Hardison; two grandchildren, Dominique Langston Jr. and Ashanti Nixon; and a host of other relatives and close friends. 

Joe was a mentor to many who loved him dearly. Some considered him their guardian angel and a coach who strived to make the best of every student he taught. 

A wake will be held in the I.C. Norcom High School Auditorium, Portsmouth, at 6 p.m. today. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in New Bethel Baptist Church, Portsmouth. The Rev. Mark Whitaker will deliver the eulogy. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is in charge.
