Deceased Name: A.B. HAGA, EDUCATOR FOR 45 YEARS, DIES

Alonzo B. Haga, superintendent of the Mecklenburg County schools from 1949 until he retired in 1976, died Thursday in a Richmond hospital. He was 80 and lived in Chase City.

Mr. Haga had been a principal at Cradock High School in Portsmouth from 1939 to 1949 and Colonial Beach High School from 1935 to 1939. He also taught at Occoquan High School in Prince William County from 1934 to 1935 and Washington High School in Rappahannock County from 1931 to 1934.
A native of Appomattox, he attended school in Danville and Prince Edward County and received his bachelor's degree from Randolph-Macon College in 1931. In 1937, he received his master's degree in education at the University of Virginia and later took graduate courses at the College of William and Mary, the University of North Carolina and the University of Kentucky.

Mr. Haga was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Kappa Alpha, Pi Gamma Mu, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Pi Delta Kappa.

He also was a past member of the National Education Association and past chairman of the Virginia Education Association and past chairman of the statewide Principals Association. He was past chairman of the Virginia High School League and the Virginia Beta Club Council of the Beta Club National Senate.

Mr. Haga was a member of the Virginia and American Associations of School Administrators, chairman of the American Red Cross' Mecklenburg County chapter, past president of the Virginia Society for Crippled Children and Adults' Mecklenburg chapter, past member of the Central Virginia Educational Television Corp. board of directors and past president of the Chase City Lions Club.

He served on the 1970 Virginia Code Commission's Committee on Education and was an administrative council member and trustee of Centenary United Methodist Church in Chase City.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Virginia Coleman Haga; a daughter, Mrs. Mary H. Doermann of Medina, Ohio; a son, Bryan M. Haga of West Point; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church in Chase City. Burial will be tomorrow at 4 p.m. in Olive Branch United Methodist Church in Prospect.
